Under-20 Lady Jags complete successful camp

Members of the team strike a pose with the coaching and technical staff at the conclusion of the camp in Toronto

Guyana’s Under-20 Junior Lady Jaguars recently wrapped up a very successful camp in Toronto, Canada.

Eighteen players from Canada, the UK and U. S. A. were in attendance, all vying for spots to represent Guyana at the Under-20 World Cup Qualifiers in October 2011 on the island of Anguilla.

Guyana will face Anguilla, Antigua and the Dominican Republic in the first round. Following the conclusion of the camp, the coaching staff said they were very pleased with the high level of play from the entire group.

The management team has high expectations of the squad considering five of the returning players are from the senior team who competed in the Gold Cup Finals in 2010.

Standout centre back from the senior team, Justine Rodrigues, and midfield player Ashlee Savona took on huge leadership roles at the camp, which was hosted by the Erin Mills Soccer Club.

Erin Mills provided the competition from a combined Under-21 Provincial team which Guyana beat 6-3. Erin Mills scored first early in the game, awaking the Guyanese girls, who then went on to score four unanswered goals to put the game away by the half.

This allowed the coaching staff to experiment with players in various positions, in an effort to recognise specific players’ strengths and weaknesses.

Technical Director Mark Rodrigues and Coach Chris Brown conducted the camp and are very optimistic that this group of players will successfully return to the Gold Cup Finals and obtain better results than their senior counterparts, subject to the availability of players during the qualifiers.

The staff will now assess the players at the camp with other players who were unable to attend, but have been observed playing at some point prior, and select the 18 best and most suited players who will make the run to the World Cup Finals in 2012.

The Under-20 squad reads: Technical Director Mark Rodrigues, Coach Chris Brown, Alisha Leila, Martyne Alphonso, Olivia Gonsalves, Leah Chisolm-Allison, Justine Rodrigues, Sara Vaughan, Darcy Pelz-Butler, Kelly Pelz-Butler, Tessa Edwards, Chantal Lynch, Kailey Leila, Elysia Prasad, Esther Frotten, Anezha Blount, Karina Moore, Nicole Gentle, Ashlee Savona, and Otesha Charles.

Meanwhile, Guyana’s Under-17 Junior Lady Jags are currently in camp in Guyana with Technical Development Officer Lyndon France. Head Coach Hope Clark from Georgia State and College is expected to arrive in Guyana shortly to work with France on the team’s preparation.

Qualifying starts August 10-28 with Guyana hosting against Anguilla and the Netherland Antilles.
