Maharaja Palace restaurant officially opens in Georgetown

Maharaja is a fusion of Asian and Indian cuisine. It offers exquisite dining and an aura of tranquility, which all describe the magnificent atmosphere to which the Maharaja Palace restaurant has been opened.

On Saturday, May 28, President Bharrat Jagdeo officially opened the Maharaja Palace restaurant located on Sheriff Street, dubbing it a restaurant with “an extremely high standard.” Guyana’s head of state, in brief remarks, noted that as the country expands there is need for all sectors to do same. He applauded the proprietors of the new restaurant, Sanjay and Anjee Sherman, for giving Guyana a restaurant with a difference.

President Jagdeo congratulated the Sherman family, stating, “Our country needs people like you… I hope you are very successful.”

Meanwhile, co- proprietor of the Maharaja Palace restaurant, Anjee Sherman, told the media that the upper storey of the three-storey building can accommodate approximately 150 persons, who would be served a variety of Asian and Indian cuisines.

She said, “This restaurant will expose Guyana to a different side to cuisines and tastes… it is culturally different.”

Sherman noted that the concept of having an Asian and Indian restaurant is a collective one, as both she and her husband, an Indian native, felt that Guyanese needed to be exposed to Asian and Indian cuisines. All the chefs at the new restaurant are from India. However, the other workers have been sourced from Guyana.

The proud owner of Anjees Furniture Store and Indian Wear stated that she is optimistic that Guyanese would enjoy the difference in cuisine.

Meanwhile, those present at the opening expressed satisfaction with the food and atmosphere.

“This is as a result of hard work. The food is great, and this is good for food business in Guyana.

“Guyana needed something different when it comes to food, and Anjee and Sanjay have given us different.”

Saturday’s menu saw a variety of Indian dishes, such as Palak Shorba- Indian spinach soup; Hala Bkara Kabab, Paneer Tika, Mora Malai Karab – roasted boneless chicken; and Chicken Lolypap — Chicken wings.

Present at the opening were presidential candidate of the People’s Progressive Party Donald Ramotar; Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud; Culture, Youth and Sport Minister Dr Frank Anthony; Pandit Reepu Daman Persaud; Housing and Water Minister Irfaan Ali; Attorney General Charles Ramson, and Head of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) Khurshid Sattaur, among other dignitaries.
