Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee last Friday urged members of the Guyana Police Force to do more at their respective divisions to address the growing concerns of domestic abuse and youths in violent crimes. Rohee at the time was delivering the feature address at the conclusion of a Junior Officers’ course at the Police Officers’ Mess Annexe, Eve Leary.
The minister, who has been outspoken about the shortcomings of the force, said recently crime was on the increase and requires the urgent attention of members of the force.
Among the concerns he noted are two dominant cases: domestic violence and youth involvement in violent crimes. According to him, these have been given top priority in his ministry. Against this background, Rohee established that more needs to be done at every level of the force to address these problems.
While it is his belief that domestic violence is a part of a social problem which cannot be denied, the minister at the same time holds the view that the force can play a major role in addressing the problems through a legal framework.
One of the commendable initiatives that has been taken by the force to curb youth violence was the formation of youth clubs and scout groups. Rohee urged the graduates to take up the challenge to continue this initiative by initiating the formation of more youth clubs and scout groups as this will benefit not only the force but society at large.
