Commander-in-Chief President Donald Ramotar has approved the promotion of 88 officers and 260 other ranks of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), the army confirmed last Friday. Chief-of-Staff, Brigadier Mark Phillips made the announcement in accordance with the Defence Act Chapter 15:01 of 1977. The promotions took effect from January 1. According to a GDF statement, 42 officers and 96 other ranks were confirmed in their rank while 46 officers and 164 ranks were elevated in rank. The National AIDS Programme Secretariat (NAPS) has finalised the National Stakeholders Consultation on HIV 2020. This is according to NAPS Programme Director, Dr Shanti Singh. Under the eight-year national strategic plan for HIV 2013-2020 (HIVision2020), there are five priority areas – coordination, prevention, care, treatment and support, and strategic information and integration, Dr Singh told Guyana Times International in an exclusive interview. Former beauty queen Carol Ann Lynch appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on Wednesday, charged for the second time for the murder of her husband – Farouk Razack. Lynch stood silently in the courtroom as Chief Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry read the indictable charge to her. The star performer in agriculture was clearly the rice industry in 2013, having scored a record-breaking production level, achieving the equivalent of more than 535,000 tonnes, a 27 percent increase over the 2012 figure of 423,000 tonnes. Local Government and Regional Development Minister Ganga Persaud said the ministry is moving to install surveillance cameras in municipalities and large markets. The cameras, he said will be under the control of the neighbourhood democratic councils. Persaud pointed out that cameras have already been installed at the Bartica Market, but did not give a timeframe when same will be done at other markets and municipalities. Public Works Minister Robeson Benn has put errant persons on notice, declaring that all illegal structures on government’s reserves will be demolished.
