The Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) Group has realised some G$936 million in taxed profits for the first half of the 2017 financial year. According to Chairman Komal Samaroo, in the company’s 2017 Interim Report, the Group’s profit for the year before taxation was G$1347 million, compared to G$1193 million in 2016, thus reflecting an increase of G$154 million, or almost 13 per cent. The Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) is expected to begin construction on some 40 houses at Onderneeming, on the Essequibo Coast in Region 2 (Pomeroon-Supenaam), according to Junior Communities Minister, Valerie Adams-Yearwood. Eight Chinese were fined and deported when they appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts charged for illegally entering Guyana three times. Gangming Fing, Zingju Gen, Zoxie Wong, Zheng Xing, Jun Quing, Aihea Wang, Pin Yen and Wu Jua all stood before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan. After months of complaints over poor working conditions and no positive response from health officials in Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica), doctors and nurses attached to the East Bank Demerara Regional Hospital, commonly known as the Diamond Diagnostic Centre or Diamond Hospital, staged strike action on Wednesday. Several hire car drivers plying the Linden/ Georgetown route have on Monday staged protest action outside the office of the Linden Mayor and Town Council (LM&TC) to register their opposition to a decision by the Council to relocate them from being stationed along the Co-op Crescent roadway to the Linden/Georgetown minibus park.
