A prominent Lethem businessman, who was named as the prime suspect by the recently-concluded Commission of Inquiry (CoI) into the construction of an illegal airstrip in Rupununi, Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo), was on Monday slapped with a conspiracy charge. The Appeal Court of Guyana has upheld the High Court’s awarding of over G$59 million in pension benefits to former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the New Building Society (NBS), Maurice Arjoon, more than 10 years after he was dismissed from his post. Even as former sugar workers continue to cry out against the continued firing of Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) workers, the Private Sector Commission (PSC) slammed the Government for not planning ahead before the closures. According to the Commission on Wednesday, the closures have not been accompanied with any plan that deals with the welfare of the workers. A Kitty, Georgetown businessman was on Monday remanded to prison when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts charged with the illegal possession of a firearm.
