Some seventeen Guyanese patients, including 15 children, have received urgent medical treatment for various heart ailments at the Max Hospital in Delhi, India through the Three Rivers Kids Foundation of Ontario, Canada. All those children were suffering from congenital heart disease. The Education Ministry, in partnership with the Commonwealth Of Learning (COL) and Microsoft Corporation, is focusing on implementing plans to develop the capacity of local teachers to use technology more effectively in the classroom. Thirteen-year-old Selina Federicks of Reliance, Essequibo Coast left her family in mourning when she took her own life on Friday evening, March 19th. Reports are that the Form One secondary school student ended her life in the bottom flat of their home using a piece of cloth and a rope to hang herself. According to relatives, the child’s action has left them baffled, as the teenager was a very mannerly and friendly individual. The Guyana Forestry Commission (GFC) says it is not responsible for packing forest produce into containers, or examining and sealing any shipment destined for export. As such, the GFC has refuted claims that it cleared the container of timber recently intercepted with cocaine in Jamaica. Additionally, the GFC has since launched an investigation into the shipment and found that there was a change in the vessel that shipped the timber out of Guyana. Following the inundation of vulnerable communities in the Mahaica/Mahaicony area of Region Five over the years, the Agriculture Ministry has finally commissioned the long-awaited Retrieve sluice and outfall at Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara. Farmers of more than 34,000 acres of farmland have suffered immense losses over time, due to the lack of adequate drainage, but all of this is expected to change with the commissioning of this multi-million-dollar sluice.
