DDL continues excellent performance

– company’s methane gas plant already in operation Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Demerara Distillers Limited, Dr Yesu Persaud, said on Friday, April 29 that, despite the unstable financial climate in the Caribbean, and the world by extension, investment in Guyana remained robust, as the construction, gold mining and manufacturing sectors grew. While delivering the Chairman’s Report to shareholders and members of the DDL, Persaud added that there were still challenges facing the company in its remaining viable. The company’s profit after taxation increased from Gy$1.033 billion…

Farmers in the Pakaraimas now planting channa, garlic, onions

Farmers in the Pakaraima mountains of Region Eight have started pilot cultivation of several exotic crops, such as garlic, chickpeas (channa) and onions, through an Agriculture Ministry project to explore produce with longer shelf life that can be grown in the mountainous areas of Guyana. Less than three months ago, the agriculture officials announced completion of a scientific study on the new crops, and their plans to move ahead with cultivation. Since then, planting materials were sourced locally and distributed free of cost to the identified farmers of villages, including…

Bin Laden’s death great blow to terrorism – PPP/ C

The People’s Progressive Party says that the death of Osama bin Laden is a great blow to international terrorism. Bin Laden, the most wanted man for over a decade, met his end when United States forces attacked a compound in which he was hiding in Pakistan. Bin Laden and the al-Qaida network which he headed admitted responsibility for the brutal attack in the U.S., on September 11, 2001, in which some three thousand persons perished, including many Guyanese and Muslims. The PPP/C, in its release, expressed hope that, with bin…

Power sharing will not work

Dear Editor, It seems this election season is indeed getting to a lot of persons. Those in opposition to the PPP government have reached the point of desperation, where rational thinking is no longer employed in decision-making, but is instead cast aside. Dr Prem Misir introduced this theory of desperation in politics in his Guyana Chronicle ‘Perspectives’ feature, published on April 17, 2011. I also noticed that in his analysis of ACDA’s “Riot Act”, in the Guyana Chronicle of April 21, 2011, Ricky Singh also employed the use of this…

His master plan – the indications!

Dear Editor, The 27th of April 2011 saw poignant scenes the likes of which have never ever been witnessed on the face of this earth: the mahasamadhi of an avatar was witnessed the world over by a number unmatched in human history. Tears flowed unbounded. Being in the world at this point in time was such a cleansing experience, for the whole atmosphere was washed with tears – pure, selfless, love-filled and grateful. They were sufficient to wipe out all sins committed by all humanity, it seemed! A lot has…

Sasenarine Singh should stay clear of criticism of the PPP/C, since he clearly lacks the moral fortitude to do so

Dear Editor, Reference is made to recent letters published in the media and purportedly written by one Sasenarine Singh. In his letters, he speaks about the cries of Guyana’s children, especially those abused and assaulted. He blamed this on the PPP/C and labelled the party and government as uncaring. It is important to note that, while it is acknowledged that Sasenarine Singh and any other Guyanese is free to express themselves and share their views in a public space, at the same time they should not be allowed to distort…

Transformation in Bartica

While some may engage in certain negativities with respect to the progress that is being made in the country, one only has to look at what is happening on the ground to form an objective opinion. Evidence abounds that Guyana is being transformed into a modern nation with a people-centred approach to national development. In the social sector, for example, there has been an enormous amount of improvement in the areas of education, health care delivery, and housing, among others. The country has re- established a market- led economy after…
