‘Coolie Bully’ to appear on April Pro-Am card

Elton ‘Coolie Bully’ Dharry is the reigning CABOFE Bantamweight champion

Reigning Caribbean Boxing Federation (C A B O F E ) Bantamweight champion, Elton ‘Coolie Bully’ Dharry, will continue his preparation ahead of the World Boxing Council’s (WBC) Cup of Champions later this year when he takes on Guyanese Charlton Skeete on the 22nd edition of Friday Night Fights ProAm boxing card on April 27 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

The Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) yesterday released the full card, which will comprise of five professional bouts and four amateur contests, with action set to get underway from 20: 00 hours.

Fighting under the alias ‘Fighting Raja’, Skeete will be hard-pressed to emerge victorious against a rampant USA-based Dharry, who has ruled the competition in the Bantamweight division in recent times.

However, the 27-year old Skeete, with a record of three defeats and one win, was confident that he has what it takes to upstage his more seasoned 26-year-old opponent, who has chalked up eight wins, five losses and one draw in his 14-fight professional career.

Speaking to this publication via telephone from the GBBC office yesterday, Skeete was adamant that he will be the man in the winning corner on fight night, noting that his preparation is on stream.

Coach James Walcott has been guiding the boxer through his paces at the Harpy Eagle gym in Albouystown, and according to him, the camp is working overtime to get Skeete in shape for the sixrounder.

“Yea, we’re doing well at the moment [in terms of preparation]. We’re working very hard at the moment to get him up to speed,” Walcott said. “Our advice to him is to box all six rounds, and stay away from that punch because Dharry packs a very hard punch.” Dharry’s last two opponents, Selwyn Lett of Barbados and Dexter Marques of Guyana, could attest to his power as they were both floored within the distance.

Lett, who was challenging for the belt, hit the canvas one minute, 55 seconds into the opening round of the ‘WBC CABOFE Caribbean Champions’ Elimination card in February, while Marques was knocked out in round seven of a 12-rounder in May last year.

Efforts by this publication to contact Dharry yesterday proved futile.

On the professional segment, debutants David Thomas and Anson Green will square off in a four-round Junior Welterweight contest; Jermin King will face Iwan Azore in a four-round Catchweight bout not exceeding 152 pounds; Dexter Marques will confront Barbados’ Ricardo Blackman for eight rounds at Bantamweight; while in the lone female clash, Guyanese Mandessa Moses will test Trinidad and Tobago’s Tiana Sosa Saney in a six-rounder at Super Featherweight.

On the amateur side, Jamal Eastman and Kurt Allicock will battle at 75-79 pounds; Travis Hubbard and Diwani Lampkin will trade skills at 105-109 pounds; Ishmael McLennon will test his ability against Quincy Boyce at 125-132 pounds; and Bert Braithwaite will look to outdo Kishawn Simon at Junior Welterweight. All the amateur fights are fixed for four rounds.
