Suspect in school boy murder surrenders

A 17-year-old student of Chase’s Academy was on Monday evening stabbed to death by one of his friends following an altercation over a girl.

The dead Malteenoes Sports Club Second Division cricketer was identified as Anfernee Bowman of 77 Robb Street, Georgetown.

The incident occurred at the Patterson’s Lessons Place, South Ruimveldt Exit, Georgetown at about 18: 30h. According to information received, it was alleged the two young men had an a argument which led to Samuel Cornelius pulling out a knife and stabbing Bowman once to his heart, once to his right side abdomen, another time to his left side abdomen and finally gashing his face. The teenager was picked up by his colleagues; placed in a taxi and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Cornelius on the other hand made good his escape after committing the act. Reports say he has since turned himself in.

When Guyana Times International visited the Georgetown Public Hospital, a huge crowd had built up comprising his schoolmates; members of the cricket club and his relatives. His mother was inconsolable.

His sisters were also being consoled by their family members. Gary Bowman, the teenager’s father stated that he received a telephone call informing him of the incident and immediately rushed to the Hospital but noted by the time he arrived, his son was already dead.

He recalled that the suspect and his son once attended the Trust College but he later transferred his son to Chase’s Academy as a result of frequent altercations between the two teenagers.

“He was an envious boy; he always had a problem with my son who dressed with the latest clothing, boots. My son was a “girls’ boy” and that was what Samuel Cornelius had an issue with”, the father recalled.

The grieving father noted that his son was a sportsman who played basketball, cricket and other sports. “He just likes to be up and about”, the father said.

A teacher stated that Bowman was a “girls’ man” who dressed to “kill”. He added that the young man was intelligent and always focused on his academic and more so his cricket career.

The teacher explained that on the night of the incident, the teenager was at Patterson’s Lesson in South when he was confronted by Cornelius which subsequently led to a disagreement.

During the argument a scuffle ensued when Cornelius allegedly pulled out the knife and stabbed the teenager. Bowman is survived by his parents, sisters and many friends. His body is at the Hospital mortuary awaiting a post mortem examination on Wednesday.
